Super-Capacity™ RAN Sets New Standard for Cost Reduction Through RAN Sharing Support, Capacity Augmentation and Bandwidth and Backhaul Optimization

Columbia, Md. – Tecore Networks, a leading provider of GSM, CDMA, 3G and multi-technology mobile networks, today introduced the next generation of its award-winning Super-Capacity GSM Radio Access Network (RAN), allowing simultaneous operation in the four most commonly utilized GSM, GPRS and EDGE frequency bands, a first for a product in its category. The quad-band feature facilitates RAN sharing among multiple operators, adding another cost reduction enabler to a range that includes capacity augmentation, bandwidth and backhaul optimization, and footprint and power minimization.

GSM and its related protocols are the most widely deployed mobile communications technologies, with over 3.1 billion subscribers worldwide. Tecore is focused on making these technologies affordable to a wider range of operators than any other vendor. As total cost of ownership and return on investment become increasingly critical, the Super-Capacity RAN addresses these requirements through:

• high channel capacity and quad-band operation – the Tecore Super-Capacity RAN can support up to 32 radio frequency carriers or transceivers in four sectors; unique in the industry, each sector can independently operate in any of four frequency bands (850, 900, 1800 or 1900 MHz);
• RAN sharing support – multiple operators can share capacity, utilizing different frequency bands, the availability of multiple network IDs per sector, or a combination of these features; when combined with Tecore’s software-defined core network platform, multi-operator support extends throughout the network
• bandwidth optimization – adaptive multi-rate (AMR) vocoding, tandem-free operation via peer-to-peer IP switching, voice activity detection (VAD) and bundling, in addition to standard features such as frequency hopping, enable operators to increase the productivity of scarce spectrum;
• backhaul optimization – IP backhaul support takes advantage of the dominance and cost-effectiveness of IP networking worldwide; an operator’s overall backhaul expense is further reduced when this RAN is installed with Tecore’s AirSite™ Backhaul-Free BTS, which relays backhaul traffic via in-band channels
• footprint and power minimization – this RAN follows the design philosophy of Tecore’s entire product line by combining the BTS, BSC and optional vocoding into a single unit, eliminating the costly and cumbersome equipment and installation challenges associated with traditional systems.
