Macro iDU

Outdoor Integrated Radio & BaseBand Unit

Overview

The Macro iDU (Integrated Digital Unit) is a high-power integrated radio and digital unit, capable of supporting multiple radio access technologies and is interoperable with other vendor radio heads and core networks. The Macro iDU provides a radio access node for User Equipment (UEs) connecting to a 4G LTE network. The Macro iDU’s unique design with an integrated BaseBand unit and radio inside of a small footprint IP67-rated chassis makes the Macro iDU is a highly portable solution that can be transported and mounted at sites where additional bandwidth is needed, without without needing to build a cell site shelter, reducing CAPEX/OPEX.

The Macro iDU’s unique design allows enterprises and operators the capability to to rapidly deploy multi-sector sites, or for carriers to add temporary additional carrier-grade network bandwidth in high traffic areas by offloading existing carrier traffic by connecting a Macro iDU to an existing cloud EPC.

iDU Architecture

Key Benefits

Low proximity between Radio & BBU yields low latency, high quality connection
High power (20W/43 dBm) outdoor Radio solution
Reduced CAPEX/OPEX by eliminating need for cell site shelter
Rapidly deploy pop-up networks to offload carrier traffic at high density sites
Interoperability with other vendor radio heads and core networks

Applications

Multi-Sector Configuration

iDU Multi-Sector Site

The Macro iDU’s unique design as an integrated bbu and radio head allows enterprises and operators to rapidly deploy and expand their networks without the hassle of designing and building air conditioned server rooms that house the bbu. By connecting the Macro iDU to an RRH, you can rapidly deploy a multi-sector site.

Cloud EPC Connected to Macro iDU

The Macro iDU’s unique radio and baseband integration offers carriers and site owners a simple solution for improving QOS (quality of service) in high density sites. By connecting the Macro iDU to an existing cloud EPC with a fiber backhaul,  existing carrier traffic can be offloaded onto new carrier-grade, high capacity bandwidth that has been authenticated and secured by the carrier.
